Rob's Story

Artist Biography — Robert Vine

Robert Vine is an accomplished Australian landscape photographer with over two decades of experience exploring and creating art through the lens. His evocative images bring the beauty of the natural environment into homes and public spaces across Australia and have been displayed prominently in government buildings, including the office of the Chief of the Air Force. Ninety of his photographs from his service in Afghanistan are preserved as part of the National Collection of the Australian War Memorial.

Robert discovered photography while serving in the Royal Australian Air Force, where capturing the world through a camera became both a creative outlet and a way to decompress from the demands of a high-pressure career. His distinguished military service included multiple tours in Afghanistan as mission commander, overseeing operations in the skies above the country. He also graduated from Australia’s elite air warfare instructor course — the nation’s equivalent of Top Gun — and later served as a course director.

In 2015, Robert’s life took a dramatic turn when he was diagnosed with epilepsy following a major seizure that left him with multiple injuries. Over time, these developed into fibromyalgia, resulting in chronic, lifelong pain. Alongside these physical challenges, Robert also lives with anxiety and depression, stemming from both his health condition and the psychological toll of military service.

Through every challenge, art has remained a constant companion — a refuge from pain and a means of expression when words fall short. His photography reflects resilience, mindfulness, and a deep reverence for the natural world. Each of Robert’s images tells a story drawn from his journey — moments of light found in struggle, calm discovered in motion, and healing through creativity.

Robert invites viewers to see the world as he does: with empathy, curiosity, and gratitude for the quiet beauty that surrounds us every day.
