A Weekend to Remember – Celebrating the Canberra Art Fair

Robert Vine standing proudly at his Canberra Art Fair exhibition, surrounded by framed fine art landscape photographs featuring colourful Canberra autumn scenes, misty sunrises, Antarctic mountains and vibrant Australian landscapes.

What a fantastic weekend at the Canberra Art Fair! After months of preparation, planning and creating new artworks, it was incredibly rewarding to see everything come together and share my photography with so many enthusiastic visitors.

One of the things I love most about exhibiting my work is the opportunity to meet people face-to-face. Throughout the weekend, so many people stopped by my exhibition to admire the images, ask questions and hear the stories behind the photographs. It was wonderful to see people connecting with the landscapes and discovering familiar places from a different perspective.

Are They Photographs or Paintings?

One question came up again and again throughout the weekend: "Are these photographs or paintings?"

I'll happily take that as a compliment!

I've always approached landscape photography as a form of artistic expression rather than simply documenting a scene. Through careful composition, light, colour and the printing process, I aim to create images that capture not just what a place looks like, but how it feels to be there.

Hearing people question whether my images were paintings was particularly rewarding. It's wonderful to know that my photography encourages people to look a little closer and perhaps see something unexpected in the landscapes around them.

A Few Crowd Favourites

While there was plenty of interest across the collection, three artworks seemed to attract particular attention throughout the fair.

Hot air balloon rising through golden morning mist at the National Arboretum Canberra during sunrise, photographed by Robert Vine.Golden Ascent – Canberra Balloon Spectacular

With its striking colours and almost dreamlike atmosphere, Golden Ascent certainly caught people's eyes. Capturing a hot air balloon rising towards the light, this photograph represents optimism, freedom and the excitement of new beginnings.

Frost-covered hills at the National Arboretum Canberra with Black Mountain Tower silhouetted against a colourful sunrise and layers of mist drifting through the valleys.Winter Veil Over the Arboretum

The soft layers of mist, delicate winter light and peaceful atmosphere of this image proved particularly popular. For me, this photograph has a deeper personal meaning, representing the gradual lifting of the fog of chronic pain and the hope of brighter days ahead.

Canberra's autumn colours never fail to impress, and this photograph was another favourite. The rich colours and beautiful natural patterns capture the magic of the changing seasons. It's also one of my wife's favourite photographs, so she'll be pleased to know that so many visitors share her taste!

More Than Just an Art Exhibition

For me, the Canberra Art Fair was about much more than displaying and selling photographs.

Since leaving the Air Force to pursue life as a professional landscape artist, I've been working towards opportunities like this. Being able to share my creative work, talk about the experiences behind the images and connect with people who appreciate art is exactly what I hoped this new chapter of my life would bring.

Every conversation, encouraging comment and expression of interest reminded me why I chose to pursue photography professionally.

It was also fantastic to be surrounded by so many talented artists, each bringing their own creative perspective to the fair. Events like this are a wonderful reminder of the strength and diversity of Canberra's creative community.

Thank You, Canberra!

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by my exhibition, whether you purchased an artwork, asked about my photographic process, shared your own experiences of the locations I'd photographed or simply stopped for a chat.

Your interest and encouragement made the weekend an incredibly rewarding experience.

I'd also like to thank everyone involved in organising the Canberra Art Fair and bringing together such a fantastic celebration of art and creativity.

I'm already excited about exhibiting again next year! I've come away from the weekend feeling inspired, with plenty of ideas for new images and artworks to share.

Until then, you can explore the collection of limited edition landscape photographs here at Robert Vine Landscape Art.

Thank you for being part of the journey.
